My first AAA-battery Coby mp3 player, the MPC-883 stick player had no screen- just buttons. There was no FF or fast rewind, among other problems.

I waited 2 years for a new line of AAA-battery Coby players. They’ve arrived as a pleasant surprise.

I bought the Coby MP-300 stick player with 1 GB memory.

The pros: The AAA battery lasts many hours. Plug the device directly into a USB port with no additional cables The FF and fast reverse work well if you are listening to podcasts or books. The player picks up where you leave off in a track when stopped and restarted. The sound quality is fine. You don’t depend on music software such as iTunes or Windows Media Player. Instead, drag and drop items to the MP-300 from the Mac or Windows file manager.

The cons: Leave the AAA battery cover off as it’s extremely difficult to mount. The battery will stay in place. The USB cover is not necessary, either. The row of tiny buttons with tiny symbols is not suitable for the young, elderly or visually impaired. The display is very small, too.

External battery supplies are becoming a thing of the past in MP3 players, so this feature tops my list of requirements. I have reviewed one other such device, the Sweetpea 3 “MP3 Player for Baby.” – Arthur.

My first MP3 player was a MuVo which lasted about 3 years before the off-on button wore out. This Coby is 1/3 the price with a 4x bigger drive – cool! I’ve had the Coby a month with no problems so far. The ear buds were not the best but I added an $8 pair of Panasonics with over-the-ear clips and it sounds great. I listen while driving a big International so it has to overcome engine and road noise. My Coby came with an offer for 50 free MP3 downloads and a free eBook from [...].

I purchased two of the MP300-1G’s, one before Christmas for $30 and another after Christmas for $20. The first one stopped working all together and the second one’s head-phone jack became loose. It also will not play all of the music Window’s Media Center shows I’ve down loaded into it. I think this is a very poor product and I would advise everyone to buy a better known brand.
